North East heroes: Whickham FC celebrate 40th anniversary of FA Vase win

Tomorrow it will be four decades since Colin Richardson led the Lang Jacks onto the hallowed Wembley turf, in the hopes of bringing home the FA Vase back to Whickham for the first time in history.

This side will always go down in Whickham folklore as they proudly represented their community and became the last North East side to win at the old Wembley, fighting back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in extra-time.

Goals from Alan Scott, Ronnie Williamson and Billy Cawthra were enough to secure lifting the trophy in front of thousands of travelling supporters.

In this article from our media executive, Ben Robinson, he discusses the day of the final with Cawthra as well as interviews from non-league expert Mark Carruthers and one of our very own committee members, Steven Peareth as they all look back on one of the proudest days in the club’s history.
