Club statement: Social media boycott

Whickham FC is proud to stand united alongside football this weekend in campaigning against the hate and abuse that is becoming increasingly prevalent online.

As a result, we will be boycotting social media platforms from 3pm on Friday, April 30 until 23.59pm on Monday, May 3.

This is part of a nationwide football blackout on these platforms. Broadly speaking, the headline requests of social media companies are:

  • Put stronger preventative and takedown measures in place to stop discriminatory abuse being sent or seen
  • Be accountable for safety on platforms and protect users by implementing effective verification
  • Ensure real-life consequences for online discriminatory abuse: ban perpetrators, stop account re-registration and support law enforcement
