Whickham FC 2-3 Consett AFC: Late FA Cup heartbreak for Lang Jacks as Steelmen come from behind twice

Whickham FC slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Consett at the First Mortgage Glebe in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.

The Lang Jacks started off brightly taking the lead after 13 minutes through Scott Robson.

The visitors soon levelled with Luke Carr cancelling out Robson’s opener two minutes later.

Damien Stevens then helped his side retake the lead nine minutes after coming off the bench.

A Jake Orrell stunner and a late winner from Carl Lawson stunned the home side as the Lang Jacks fell to a disappointing defeat.

Dale Burrell returned to the starting lineup after being unavailable for the Billingham Town match in midweek.

The away side had the ball in the back of the net after five minutes through a Dale Pearson lob but the linesman disallowed the goal for offside.

Jack Norton in the Whickham goal had to stretch across his goal-line to tip the ball over the top after a free-kick was struck goalward five minutes later.

Scott Robson then gave the hosts the lead after Jack Robson burned past his marker down the line before crossing the ball to the back post where Scott Robson was able to bring the ball down and smash the ball through the goalkeeper the net.

Consett equalised two minutes later when Luke Carr found space in the final third before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

Two chances came and with both sides coming close, Dale Pearson smashed the post after sneaking behind the defence before Scott Robson tested Kyle Hayes with a close ranged header after Jack Robson once again picked him out at the back post.

Pearson found himself in a similar position two minutes before the break but this time his near post effort was well saved by Norton.

Stevens then capitalised on a high Consett backline where Jack Robson was able to slide him through on goal where the striker slotted the ball home with 20 minutes left.

Norton made another top draw save tipping the ball over for a corner where the visitors drew level again through Orrell giving the ‘keeper no chance with a curling effort.

Stevens had another chance to score through a duplicate chance to his last goal but the goalkeeper rushed at his feet and making a good save from close range.

Lawson broke Lang Jack hearts after Pearson’s initial effort struck the bar before Lawson headed home the rebound.
