Whickham v Frickley Athletic: Lang Jacks face stern test in FA Cup opener

After a solid start to their league campaign, Whickham turn their attention to the FA Cup with Frickley Athletic the visitors to The Glebe on Sunday afternoon in the first Extra Preliminary Round.

Whickham currently sit third in Division 1 of the Northern League, after beating Crook Town and Tow Law Town to start the league season. However, with Sunday’s visitors playing in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, it promises to be a tough ask for Tony Fawcett’s men.

Frickley currently sit 5th in their division, having scored a late winner to open their league season with a win against Maltby Main, Lee Bennett providing a 90th minute winner for Wayne Benn’s side.

With Frickley playing in the 9th level of the English football pyramid compared, a fair few steps above the Lang Jacks, it would be fair to say that the neutral sees the Lang Jacks as underdogs. On the other hand, Whickham will be looking to ride their early season momentum and the home crowd to their advantage and provide a “cupset” to their opponents.

Get yourself down to The Glebe on Sunday afternoon if you can and cheer the lads on as they chase a successful start to the FA Cup!
