Birtley Win Local Bragging Rights

Whickham were beaten 2-0 by Birtley Town at The Arrowmark Home Improvements Stadium on Friday evening.

A goalless first-half and then Liam Wotherspoon and Alex Francis goals in the second-half gave the home side three points.

The first 45 minutes saw few chances for either side and the ball was in the middle third of the pitch for large parts of the half.

The best chance of the half was for The Lang Jacks as Scott Robson raced away in behind and shot from inside the box but Alfie Gordon’s reflexes were equal to it.

Birtley had a good chance of their own after 20 minutes as Wotherspoon crossed from a corner and Francis met it without a challenge but he headed wide.

Halfway into the second period and The Hoops took the lead after a swift counter attack as Matthew Ward ran half the length of the pitch and teed up Wotherspoon who slotted home.

Two minutes from time and the game was almost level after a scramble in the box which Birtley failed to clear twice, Harry Yoxall took aim from 10 yards on the half-turn but fired over the bar.

The game was soon after sealed as the home side were awarded a penalty which Francis stepped up and fired down the middle.
