Whickham reinstated into FA Vase

Whickham FC have today been reinstated into the FA Vase after the Football Association ruled that Irlam FC had played two ineligible players in Saturday’s third round tie at the First Mortgage Glebe.

Irlam won the tie 1-0 but discovered afterwards that two players had not been registered before the deadline.

An FA statement said: “The Club (Irlam) admitted the charge, therefore it was found proven in so much that both players had played in the match having not been correctly registered by the Registration Deadline, in accordance with Rule 15(h)(i).

“The Members, having considered the mitigation presented, found that the Club had failed to satisfy them in accordance with the provisions allowed for in FA Vase Rule 16(c), specifically that they could not have known even had they made every reasonable enquiry (with the exercise of the utmost caution) that the Players were not eligible.

“The Members, having deliberated on the matter, unanimously agreed that the Club be removed from this season’s FA Vase Competition and that Whickham FC be awarded the tie and progress to the Fourth Round Proper.

“Whickham FC shall now play away to Blyth Town FC in the Fourth Round Proper on Saturday 13 January 2024, subject to any appeal by the Club.”

Whickham FC chairman Ross Gregory said: “We recognise the FA’s judgement and are pleased to have a second chance in the Vase. I wish Irlam all the best for the rest of the season.

“We look forward to taking on Blyth Town in the next round. They had a fantastic win over Bishop Auckland at the weekend and it will be a tough tie, hopefully with a lot of local interest.”
