Opposition View: Q&A with Former Lang Jack and Shildon Striker Nathan Greenwood

With the upcoming Durham County Cup final taking place at the Stadium of Light on the 15th of April, Whickham FC sat down with former Lang Jacks player Nathan Greenwood to preview the final.

Greenwood is currently plying his trade for Shildon AFC, who are currently second in the Northern League Division One.

Whilst he is having a great season, he will no doubt be hoping to add some silverware for Shildon.

Q: While you do still have the league to fight for, how important is the cup final to you personally coming up against your former club?

Greenwood stated: “The cup final is important for me both personally and as a team, it’s the first chance for us to win anything this season as a group and we must make the most out of the opportunity and give everything which I’m sure we will.

“There’s nothing personal about this match, but I do have great memories at Whickham, and the club played a big part in helping my journey to enjoy football again after being released by Sunderland, so I’m grateful they gave me an opportunity.”

Greenwood has scored 14 goals in 33 appearances and is in fine form, scoring four goals in the last five games.

Q: You’ve got four goals in the last five games; how are you feeling going into the remaining games of the season?

Greenwood went on to say: “Yeah, I’m definitely in a good run of form at the moment, and there’s no better time than now to have that confidence and take it into the cup final.”

Q: How would you assess your own season and Shildon’s?

Greenwood responded with:
“Since joining Shildon about 3 months into the season, we have looked really good, the team has a great mix of experience and youth and a lot of very technically good players and the management has chosen a team with great cohesion and there are no bad eggs, so the chemistry within the team and how we get on is part of the reason why we have done so well this season, but overall, we haven’t achieved anything yet, and we are motivated to do so and we have three great opportunities in the coming weeks to cement this team being historical.

“On a personal note, since leaving Whickham it’s took a while to find a club suitable for me in terms of style of play, however speaking to Chris and believing in his ideas, I’ve made one of the best decisions I could have possibly made by joining Shildon, it’s the first season outside of pro football I’ve been able to just play and have no issues. So, on a personal note, it’s been a great season, but I’m still hungry for more. I’m only 24, and I still want to get everything I can out of my footballing career before it ends.”
