Trevor Baston joins Whickham FC as assistant manager

Whickham FC are delighted to announce the appointment of Trevor Baston as the first team’s new assistant manager, replacing Wayne Buchanan who has stepped down for personal reason.

Baston joins the Lang Jacks after leaving Wallington, where he has successfully served as manager for the last five years. He led the club to their first Northern Alliance Premier Division title in 47 years last season, and has also lifted two cups and been beaten finalists a further four times during his spell at the club.

He will join manager Tony Fawcett and his management team of Simon Moody and Adam Mooney ahead of the 2025/26 season. Buchanan, meanwhile, steps away with the best wishes of the club after the former Bolton Wanderers and Lisburn defender’s second spell on the coaching team.

Fawcett said: “I want to take a moment to thank Wayne for everything he’s done as my number two. Wayne is not only an outstanding coach – sharp, knowledgeable, and always committed to getting the best out of the team – but also one of the most professional and dependable people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.

“Through the highs and lows, especially when times have been tough, Wayne has been a steady presence and an incredible support. His insight, loyalty, and work ethic have meant the world to me, and I genuinely don’t know how I would have managed without him at times.

Beyond the football, Wayne is a true friend – someone I’ve trusted implicitly and will deeply miss having by my side. While I fully respect and support his decision to step away for personal reasons, his absence will be felt both professionally and personally.

“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Trevor as my new assistant manager. I’ve been looking forward to working with Trevor for some time, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together. Trevor is a winner – simple as that. His track record at Wallington speaks for itself, and his results there reflect both his quality as a coach and his ability to build a strong, successful team.

“What stands out most to me, though, is the kind of person Trevor is. He’s genuine, grounded, and a top character – exactly the type of person I want around the group. I’ve no doubt he’ll fit in brilliantly alongside Simon Moody and Adam Mooney. The three of them will complement each other perfectly, and I’m confident the dynamic we’ll have as a staff will be a real strength going forward.”
