Whickham Football Club are delighted to announce that we are replacing our traditional front of shirt sponsorship with a message of support, dedicated to our NHS and key workers.

Although the return date for the sport we all love is unsure, the club wanted to offer something back to those putting their lives at risk to ensure the country keeps going.

The rainbow has become a symbol of support for people wanting to show solidarity with those people working on the front-line. Therefore, on the front of our home shirt next season, we are asking fans and the wider audience to design the symbol incorporating the rainbow to show the club and the communities support.

The winner will be selected and will have their design on the front of our commemorative home shirt, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of Whickham winning the FA Vase. They will receive the first strip off the production line as well as a season ticket for them and three others for the 2020-21 season. Terms and conditions will be released on Monday morning.

It has also been decided, among the committee at the club, that everyone will be invited along to our first game back at the Glebe, whenever that may be.

Also, prior to the start of every home match, we are aiming to have a minute’s applause to show our appreciation for the NHS and all key workers.

Director of football, Neil Wilson, said: “Everyone here at Whickham Football Club wanted to play their part, showing their support for the brave men and women that’ve all played their part in these unprecedented times.

“We, like many other clubs, have troubles at the moment, but it doesn’t compare to the troubles that those working on the front-line are dealing with. We’re delighted to dedicate the front of our home shirt next season to those people.

“At the club, we have players, management and committee members, whose family or friends are on the front-line. This is a cause close to our hearts, as it is with everyone else, and we want to show solidarity and support during this time. There will also be a minute’s  applause prior to the start of every home game.

“We will also be supporting all local businesses, who supported us last season, through sponsorship by giving them free sponsorship for the coming season.

“We’re also pleased to announce that everyone will be invited to the first game back at the Glebe. We hope the community can get on board with this initiative and also continue to show their support for the NHS and all of our key workers.”
